1) Panel drafting new education policy gets another extension
•Union Human Resource Development Ministry has extended till August 31 the term of K Kasturirangan Committee drafting a new education policy. A senior HRD Ministry official said, the panel had sought an extension to give final shape to the policy and the minister has approved it. The panel headed by the former ISRO chief was supposed to submit its the report by June 30. This is the third extension granted to the panel. Initially, it was supposed to submit its report by December 2017.
•The existing National Education Policy was framed in 1986 and revised in 1992. A new National Education Policy was part of the BJP manifesto.
•Apart from Kasturirangan, the committee has eight members, including mathematician Manjul Bhargava.
•The panel will also take into account the report of a panel headed by former cabinet secretary TSR Subramanian, formed by the HRD ministry. The TSR Subramanian panel submitted its report to the government in May 2016, suggesting measures to strengthen the education sector that caters to over 300 million students.
2) Indian Warship INS Trikand Reaches Sri Lanka In Goodwill Visit
•India's latest frontline warship INS Trikand has reached Sri Lanka in a goodwill visit. Sri Lanka Navy ceremonially welcomed the state-of-the-art warship in accordance with naval traditions.
•INS Trikand is a state-of-the-art warship of the Indian Navy equipped with a versatile range of weapons and sensors capable of addressing threats in all three dimensions - air, surface and sub-surface.
3) South Korean President to arrive in New Delhi this evening
•South Korean President, Moon Jae-in will reach New Delhi this evening on a four-day visit to India. During the visit, a ceremonial reception will be accorded to President Moon. He will also hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders will hold discussions on a wide range of bilateral, regional and global issues of shared interest with a view to further strengthen the Special Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
•Besides, some agreements will be signed.
4) 2-day International Round Table Conference on Statistics to begin from tomorrow
•The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation will organise a two-day International Round Table Conference in New Delhi beginning from tomorrow. The objective of the conference is to identify innovative ideas for improving the statistical system in India, taking cue from the best practices followed in advanced countries like Canada, UK and Australia. Such a Conference is being organized in India for the first time. Union Minister of Statistics and Programme Implementation D.V. Sadananda Gowda will inaugurate the conference.
•The experts from National and International agencies will deliberate on key statistical issues, such as data governance structure and capabilities, organizational issues, managing data systems in a federal structure and resource mobilization for ensuring quality statistical products. The conference is expected to suggest measures paving way for initiating the reform process in the Indian Statistical System.
5) India's Dalabehera Bags Bronze In Junior World Weightlifting
•Indian lifter Jhilli Dalabehera has bagged the bronze medal in the 2018 IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championships at Tashkent. She lifted 167 kg in the 48 kg category to finish third on the podium.
•According to Indian Weightlifting Federation Secretary General Sahdev Yadav, Jhilli is the second woman lifter after Saikhom Mirabai Chanu in 2013 to win a medal in the Junior World Championships.
