1Madhya Pradesh CM Announces Total Ban on Polythene Bags

  1. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday announced a total ban on polythene carry bags from May 1 in Madhya Pradesh in a bid to conserve the environment, protect cows and promote cleanliness.
  2. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, in his Republic Day address, also praised the MP Police for its swiftness in neutralizing eight SIMI suspects who escaped from local central jail last year, in an encounter here.

2Delhi University to be the first public varsity with ‘monumental’ flagpole

  1. Eleven months after all Central university vice-chancellors resolved to install the national flag “prominently and proudly” on their campuses,
  2. Delhi University is set to hoist its first monumental flag tomorrow. According to the Flag Foundation of India, DU is the first public university in the country to get a monumental flagpole.
  3. The resolution to install the national flag on campuses was adopted on February 18 last year at a meeting chaired by then HRD Minister Smriti Irani with an aim of “instilling nationalism and pride” in students.
  4. The decision had come against the backdrop of a controversy over alleged shouting of anti-India slogans being raised at a event in JNU.

3. US Emmy award-winning actress Mary Tyler Moore dies aged 80

  1. Emmy award-winning US actress Mary Tyler Moore has died at the aged of 80.
  2. She was best known for her television roles in the 1960’s sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show and the eponymous The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the 1970’s.
  3. She was also nominated for a best actress Oscar in 1980 for the film Ordinary People.
  4. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Moore moved to Los Angeles when she was eight years old and started her career in show business as a dancer aged 17.
4. Trump orders wall to be built on Mexico border

  1. President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed directives to build a wall along the US border with Mexico and crack down on US cities that shield illegal immigrants, proceeding quickly on sweeping and divisive plans to curb immigration and boost national security.
  2. The Republican President is also expected to take steps in the coming days to limit legal immigration, including executive orders restricting refugees and blocking the issuing of visas to people from several Muslim-majority Middle Eastern and North African countries including Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, Iran, Libya and Yemen.
  3. Trump signed two executive orders at the Department of Homeland Security, one ordering construction of a wall along the roughly 2,000-mile (3,200 kilometre) US-Mexico border and the other moving to strip federal grant money from “sanctuary” states and cities, often governed by Democrats, that harbour illegal immigrants.

5. Usain Bolt loses one Olympic gold medal as Nesta Carter tests positive

  1. Usain Bolt will have to hand back one of his nine Olympic gold medals after Jamaican team-mate Nesta Carter tested positive for a banned substance.
  2. Carter was part of the Jamaican quartet that won the 4x100m in Beijing in 2008. His was one of 454 selected doping samples retested by the International Olympic Committee last year, and has been found to contain the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine.
